In the Summertime | Battery and Tires

It’s already hot in New Orleans, but it’s going to get hotter – time to think about summer car care.

Memorial Day weekend is here. Some see it as a time for road trips. Others as a chance to chomp and drink their way through the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience. Still others think of it as a time to sample the food, music and fun at Greek Fest. It’s all those things, but it’s also a reminder that the official beginning to summer is only a month away. And that’s a cue for drivers to think about summer car care.

As the nonprofit Car Care Council notes in Car and Driver magazine: “Summer can be tough on cars, especially during high temperatures when heat can destroy batteries and stress the cooling system and tires. As a precaution, these vehicle components should be checked periodically during summer to help avoid breakdowns and car problems.”

Why is that?

“Excessive heat and overcharging shorten the life of a battery. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, which then damages the internal structure of the battery. … The cooling system also works harder during hot temperatures to prevent overheating of the engine. … Tires also need special care in warmer weather as high temperatures put added stress on them,” the article explains.

It’s wise to start now to make sure your battery, cooling system (radiator, etc.) and tires are in good shape for the summertime. It’s easy to do – just drop by one of Twin Tire and Auto Care’s three convenient locations in Marrero, Hammond or Harvey. (That’s if you have a car or light truck. If you have a heavy, commercial vehicle, come by our Harahan shop.) Twin Tire has been the trusted shop for tire service and auto repair in the greater New Orleans area since 1973. Our car repair experts can keep you on the road all summer long. And, if you need new tires, we can help with that, too. We stock all brands, sizes and styles to suit every car and driving need.

Twin Tire will be open Memorial Day.
