To help yourself stay safe during New Orleans' rains, make sure your tires are in good shape.
For the past few days, the monsoons seem to have found New Orleans. And there's more on the way today, say the weather experts. And while it might be nice to simply stay indoors curled up with a cat and a book or napping or watching TV, that's impossible for most of us. We have to go out to work, to take the kids to school, or go to other New Orleans activities.
And it goes without saying that you have to be careful when driving in the rain. But many times drivers forget that you don't have to be especially careful only when it's raining. As long as the pavement is wet, driving is more dangerous. One of the real dangers of wet pavement, according to Consumer Reports, is the possibility of hydroplaning, especially when you're driving too fast or your tires are worn.
"Hydroplaning happens when water causes a vehicle's tires to lift off the road surface. That makes you lose control of the car; you can't steer or stop," Consumer Reports says. "Hydroplaning happens quickly and, unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do except lift off the gas pedal and coast until steering feel returns. But there are ways that you can avoid trouble."
Two ways to stay safer involve your driving style - slow down and avoid standing water when possible. Consumer Report's other tips involve your car's tires: Make sure you have the right tires for your car and make sure they're not worn.
