Cold weather takes a toll on cars and trucks. When cold weather hits, ramp up your auto care.
Winter weather has arrived in the greater New Orleans and Metairie areas, according to weather forecasters. Okay, so it’s not the sub-zero temperatures some other parts of the country are experiencing, but it is going to be cold. As in below-freezing if forecasters are right. Lows for tonight are expected to drop into the 20s and hover just above freezing for the next couple of days.
Colder temperatures are accompanied by special auto care issues. As Road and Travel Magazine says, “When temperatures plunge … every part of your car has to work harder to perform at its best.”
Road and Travel has several auto care tips to make sure your car or light truck weathers the chill. (They’re even more important if you’re planning on a road trip to a snowy area for a bit of skiing, sledding or ice skating.) Among those tips: Check your tires for wear and to make sure they’re properly inflated. Check your battery to make sure it’s up for the extra oomph it’ll take to start your vehicle in colder weather. Make sure your coolant (anti-freeze) is up to par.
“Anti-freeze can be one of the trickiest parts of your winterizing routine because, even though it has a strong green color, the additives could be worn out,” Road and Travel says. “This can cause the inside of your radiator to rust and if you are the type who ‘just adds water’ when the level is down, your anti-freeze mixture may have lost its ability to withstand freezing temperatures. You may have worthless green gunk under the hood!”
You can worry about these things yourself. Or you can make it easy on yourself by coming to Twin Tire and Auto Care to let our ASE-certified mechanics do their thing. We’ll make sure your car will get you where you’re going, like tonight’s Bela Fleck concert.
